Program Purpose & Overview
The UNESCO Chair Program was adopted at the 26th UNESCO General Conference in 1992 to bolster higher education cooperation and strengthen the ideals of UNESCO.
In March 2017, Korea National University of Heritage (KNUH) signed an agreement with UNESCO to establish a Chair program on “Capacity Building for the Conservation and Restoration of Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage.
Through the UNESCO Chair Program, KNUH engages in education, research, scholar/student exchanges, workshops, seminars, curriculum development, and publications. Acting as a “”think tank”” facilitator among academia, civil society, local communities, and policymakers, KNUH contributes to global discourse on cultural heritage.
In 2020, KNUH expanded its Chair program to support external researchers focusing on Asia-Pacific traditional materials and techniques. This includes webinars, academic forums, and research publication. Starting in 2023, KNUH has further broadened the program scope by inviting individual researchers and scholars from overseas universities for collaborative research.
Through these initiatives, KNUH aims to build a sustainable network of cultural heritage professionals and a growing pool of experts, forging lasting exchanges with both domestic and international institutions and researchers.
